Corporate Sustainability

Create value and a sense of purpose

Air Liquide strives to contribute to a more sustainable world. Our prerequisites to action are safety, ethics and respect of human rights. Safety is an integral part of Air Liquide’s operational excellence. The Group also ensures strict compliance with human rights and business ethics. Air Liquide has set the most ambitious objectives climate of its industry.

Safety objective: zero accidents

Safety remains a top priority for Air Liquide’s management and employees. Continuously and durably improving the health and safety in the workplace of its employees and subcontractors is the first Air Liquide’s priority challenges, in each region, in each entity.

The lost-time accident frequency rate of Air Liquide employees continued to improve and stood at 1.2 at the end of 2019, a 3.9% improvement compared to 2018. This is the lowest frequency rate the Group has achieved in more than 20 years.

Climate & Air quality

As part of its global approach to climate, Air Liquide sets the most ambitious objectives of its sector: reducing its carbon intensity (in CO2 equivalent/euro of operating income recurring before depreciation and amortization at 2015 exchange rate and excluding IFRS16 for greenhouse emissions scope 1 and 2) by 30% by 2025, based on 2015 emissions.

Creating innovative and earth-friendly molecules such as enScribe™
enScribe™, a family of advanced etching material that facilitates the manufacturing of complex memory structures, while greatly reducing the environmental impact. When a major semiconductor customer adopts one of these molecules as a replacement to the baseline product, it has the potential to reduce the entire sector’s carbon emissions by up to 1%.

Hydrogen, a clean energy
Hydrogen is one of the solutions that offer a response to the challenges of clean transportation: reducing greenhouse gases, pollution in our cities, and dependency on oil-based fuels. Used in the fuel cell, hydrogen combines with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with water as the only by-product. Hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy sources. Hydrogen thus has great potential to provide clean energy and be an alternative to fossil fuels. Hydrogen energy is a fast-growing field of which the Group masters the entire industrial chain (from production and storage to distribution and uses for the end-user) and is also actively involved in setting up this industry.
Electronics fabs consume increasing quantities of pure Hydrogen. Air Liquide has the technologies to produce such pure hydrogen using renewable energy.

Ethics

Wherever we operate, our subsidiaries respect the local cultures and traditions while also carrying the Group’s values through their actions and local commitment.

In line with our Principles of Action, we are committed to complying with all laws and regulations in force, and in particular the rules of fair trade and zero tolerance of corruption in any form. Our behavior and actions are driven by the principles of integrity and transparency.

The Group’s ethics program is built to help employees develop their activities with integrity and transparency in compliance with the rules of conduct. It is based on the following pillars.

Air Liquide is not an RBA member. However, as it is a supply chain initiative, customers ask Air Liquide to adhere to the principles of the RBA Code of Conduct. Adherence to the Code demonstrates Air Liquide's willingness to be a sustainable business partner.

Air Liquide Electronics’ operations are well prepared to support and implement the RBA principles, thanks to the observance of the Group's existing Corporate Social Responsibility program, and the various certifications in place with regards to safety and environment.
